One of my favorite sets from this film was transforming a neglected upstate Lake House into the emotional center of Billy Crystal’s character Charlie and family as well location for the film’s finale.
Production Designer Andrew Jackness and I had a lot of fun with highlighting the whimsical, colorful, and vibrant aspects of Emma’s (Tiffany Haddish) personality in this set. Since Emma is inspired by old jazz greats I really played with vintage pieces and believe the character did a lot of thrifting for the elements in her apartment.
I loved these vintage curtains so much and how well they contrasted with the window frames: alas you never saw them on screen!
We spent a lot of time gathering the right pieces to create a layered workplace where a writer like the character like Charlie had spent decades writing. I’m happy with how it turned out.
ok i know this is essentially just a wider shot of the earlier still, but I think it shows more of the layers we created. One thing I wish we did a better job on was layers on the wall.
The bulletin board is meant to be new and sparse since it is a new element but I think the walls could have a little more varied texture and layer.
I mean, yes it is just an office. I had some fun with a few details on her desk though.
Part of the plot is how Charlie is so much older than all the kids working there, so we gave his office a more mid-century vintage look.
fun fact the set dressers and I had to come up with all these different sketch ideas you see taped up everywhere in the office.
there’s one whole enormous wall in the area where we dressed all the writer’s desk (you never see it in the final cut of the movie) filled with sketch ideas cards.
Producer Brad’s office with a bulletin board very obviously modeled after the one Lorne Michaels has in his office.
in the script there’s a whole little moment at the photo booth. We had a perfect photobooth but alas it wouldn’t fit in the elevator (even after all our preliminary measurements) and had to find this one last minute. Alas this moment did not make the final cut.
